The R-C Morning Report

Lightning set more than a dozen fires along the Pine Nut Mountains on Sunday afternoon. Most of the fires were quickly doused, though the storm did prompt a high-wind warning for Storey and Lyon counties. In our neck of the woods, a small brush fire was reported by the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center in Antelope Valley and there were numerous lightning fires near Highway 358 in the Bridgeport Fire District that set the Cedar fire. Most of the storm stayed well to the north and east of us.

One of two men arrested at a Stateline casino for selling 500 Ecstasy tablets in a drug sting is scheduled to be sentenced this morning in Douglas County District Court. Christopher Gonzales was arrested Sept. 5, 2007 at the Mont Bleu Casino along with Caleb Fry. Fry was sentenced to a suspended 5-year prison term in April because he provided assistance to prosecutors. Gonzales faces up to 15 years in prison and a $100,000 fine for trafficking.

The smoke is back, but the chance of thunderstorms is pretty much gone this morning. The National Weather Service is predicting it will be blown out of the Valley by the afternoon winds, but there is always the possibility that there are some other fires smoldering out there after the lightning storm.
