Baseball: Carson Valley Hooligans blow out South Tahoe

It appeared as though nothing was going to be able to slow down the bats of the Carson Valley Little League Hooligans baseball team at Ranchos Aspen Park Thursday night.

Carson Valley put together a 14-run first inning to push ahead to a 21-9 win over South Tahoe in the first game of the District I Hooligans Tournament.

South Tahoe picked up four runs in the first, but Carson Valley came right back in the bottoms half of the inning.

Taylor Souza led off with a ground rule double, sparking the 14-run burst.

Carson Valley sent 19 batters to the plate in the inning, during which Matt Jones doubled in a pair of runs as well.

Cameron Fricke, Joe Almeida, Dustin Plante, Joey Swisher and Brandon Bohan all singled.

South Tahoe put up five more runs in the second, cutting the score to 14-9, but Carson Valley pitcher Jake Mariani led off the bottom half with a single, starting a five-run rally.

Mariani shut Tahoe down through the third and the first out of the fourth and Souza came on to close out the game in just four pitches, inducing a pop up to Almeida at catcher and a fly ball to Jones at second base.

Jared Morgan, Matt Wasser and Andrew Bigam each had hits and Jake Booher drew a walk and Brennen Collins was hit by a pitch as every player on the 13-man Carson Valley roster reached base at least once.

Carson Valley will play Carson National Saturday and will take on Sparks Centennial Sunday at 6 p.m.

The team will wrap up pool play Monday night against Reno American East at 8 p.m. The single-elimination bracket begins Tuesday at Aspen Park.
