Review of county documents shows time at address, party

A review of the 10 county commission candidates' voter registration forms revealed only two could claim more than a decade at their current addresses.

According to information obtained from the Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer's Office, the candidates averaged 6.4 years at their current addresses.

The only Douglas native running for county commission is the person who most recently altered his home address on his voter registration information.

Blaine Spires changed his address when he filed for Douglas County Commission District 3 to that of his fiancee, Lauren Hayes, on May 5. A note in the file shows he changed his address from Wisteria Drive in Minden to a home on Scotch Pine Way in Gardnerville, which Hayes purchased in February, according to documents filed with the Douglas County Recorder's Office. The couple was married on June 27.

A voter registration form signed by Spires on Dec. 24, 2007, lists his parents' home on Wisteria as his address.

The information was obtained from an examination of voter registration forms for the 10 county commission candidates. Nevada law requires that a candidate live in their district for 30 days prior to filing for office. Democrats and Republicans are required to have registered in their party by Dec. 30, 2007.

There's no doubt Spires is a longtime Valley resident. His birth on Oct. 28, 1983, was listed in The Record-Courier and he graduated from Douglas High School in 2002.

According to the Clerk's Office, he first registered to vote a week after he turned 18 in 2001.

Commission District 1 Candidate David Nelson's form shows he first registered to vote in Douglas County on Jan. 23, 2004, as a libertarian. He changed parties to Republican on Aug. 26, 2005, and changed his address to 980 Winter Green on Nov. 13, 2007.

Commission District 3 candidate Eric Rieman changed his party from nonpartisan to Independent American on May 22, after filing for office. Rieman was turned away during the filing period, but was later able to file because state law allows minor party candidates to change their affiliation at any time.

District 1 candidate Greg Lynn has been registered as a Republican in Douglas County since April 9, 2003. He registered to vote after moving from his home on Emigrant Trail in Woodfords, Calif., that same date. Lynn is a longtime area resident, with business dealings reported to the Recorder's Office as early as 1985.

District 5 candidate Stuart Posselt has also been registered to vote here since 2003, when he arrived from Benicia, Calif. He has lived at his present address since 2005.

District 1 candidate Anje de Kinjf has been registered to vote as a Democrat in the county since 2002, according to her voter registration form. The Recorder's Office shows she has had business dealings in the county since 1994.

Another Democrat, District 5 candidate Nancy Epstein has been registered to vote at her current address since April 4, 2001.

Epstein's District 5 opponent in the Democratic primary, engineer George Thiel first registered to vote on Nov. 15, 1999. According to the county recorder's office, Thiel has had business dealings in the county since 1983.

District 5 candidate Michael Olson's registration form shows he first registered to vote at his address on Silverado in Johnson Lane in 1998.

The only incumbent in the race, District 3 County Commissioner Doug Johnson has been registered to vote since Oct. 10, 1988, when he filed as a nonpartisan. Johnson altered his party on Sept. 28, 2002, to Republican, when he changed his address to the Mustang Lane residence where he currently lives.

All three District 3 commission candidates were married in Douglas County, Johnson married Janice Margaret Shiffert on Feb. 25, 1989. Rieman married Annalyn Settelmeyer on Sept. 28, 1996.
