Students celebrate firefighters

Through the winter pall of Tuesday afternoon more than 20 students of Minden Montessori School & Care Center dragged a wooden wagon full of presents to the fire station next to their school.

Firefighters of East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts Station No. 14, which is located on County Road in Minden, were out on call when the students showed up, but when they returned, they found soda, energy drinks, cookies, candy, salami and cheese and a colorful poster signed by students wishing them a merry Christmas.

"Since 1999, the firefighters have probably been over to our school four times," said Montessori owner Garry Leiss.

Leiss and his wife Linda said they are fortunate not only to have a fire station next to Montessori, but to have firefighters who respond so quickly to any event, including false alarms.

"Last year a Thanksgiving turkey set off our smoke alarms," Leiss said.

About 75 students attend Montessori, ranging from infants to 6-year-olds.

Montessori Director Kathy Jones-Tynes said community service is an important part of the school's curriculum.

"It takes the whole community to take care of each other," she said. "The fire department is excellent. We appreciate their closeness and how well they take care of us and the children."

Memphis Montoya, 6, also appreciates what the fire department does. In fact, he said he might want to become a firefighter when he grows up.

"I like them," he said.
