Welding classes expand at WNC

Staff Reports

Saturday and evening classes will allow more working students to take introductory welding classes this fall at Western Nevada College, Douglas. There are plans to offer more advanced classes in the future.

"We help people who are not working gain entry-level skills so they can be hired in the industry," said Ed Martin, welding instructor and WNC technology division chairman. "For those who are working, we can improve their skills and obtain certification that will increase their salaries. Businesses also gain because they don't have to contract out for specialty welding."

For the fall semester beginning Aug. 25, Welding I is offered Saturday mornings and Monday evenings. Welding I practice is Saturday afternoon and Welding II will be taught Wednesday evenings.

"We have a lot of local support from industry," Martin said. "Our classes cover Mig welding, arc welding and Tig welding. Everything from fabrication, maintenance and specialty welding. Employers are interested in sending their workers to our advanced classes."

Martin said Carson Valley's blend of manufacturing and agriculture means a lot of demand for welding. Students may make repairs on equipment as part of class projects, and at much less cost.

Students of advanced classes may obtain certification as part of class. Martin said having work evaluated for certification outside of a classroom can cost a few hundred dollars.
