The 1,200-acre East Lake fire that closed Highway 395 for a time north of Washoe Valley is a big reminder of what we can look forward to this season. We've had the wind reignite a couple of controlled burns over the past few weeks, and it's clear that any spark could end up burning down a house, a field or even a community.
It's been a busy week for fire investigators, so far. We should have and report causes for the two home fires today. Hopefully, we'll also have some better relief information to share with you.
The peak gust from Tuesday's wind storm hit Foothill at 65 mph at 2:13 p.m., according to a National Weather Service spotter. At 2:36 p.m. a gust of 54 mph from almost the opposite direction was also recorded in Fish Springs.
We start back up the temperature roller coaster again today. The National Weather Service is forecasting a high of 58 with winds blowing 10-15 mph. We might have a decent weekend with highs in the low 70s and not too much wind. But no matter how nice it is, do not plant the tomatoes yet.
