John Edward Beck

1938-2008

A funeral service is 1 p.m. Saturday at Walton's Chapel for former Bently Nevada worker John Edward Beck, 90, of Carson City.

Born Oct. 31, 1917, of Gilroy, Calif., to James and Flora Beck.

A visitation will precede the service from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. at Walton's. A celebration of Mr. Beck's life will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church immediately following the service.

Mr. Beck farmed with his family in the Carrizo Plains, Greenfield and Watsonville, Calif. In 1938, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, serving aboard the Navy frigate USS Ogden during World War II and on the Coast Guard icebreaker USCGC Northwind in the Arctic in the years immediately following the war.

He married Louise Tyler in Berkeley, Calif., in 1947. He retired from the Coast Guard in 1958. Mr. Beck then worked for Sperry Rand Corp. in Salt Lake City for one year, before taking a position with Aerojet General Nucleonics in Idaho Falls, Idaho. In 1966 he transferred to Las Vegas where he worked two more years with Aerojet. In 1968 he married Bernice Hollis. The couple settled with their family in Carson City in 1971.

Mr. Beck worked for Bently before starting his own appliance repair business in Carson City called Beck's Service Co.

Mr. Beck enjoyed traveling and he was active in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Carson City. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by wife, Louise (deceased 1966) and wife Bernice (deceased 1998), and by sisters, Margery and Lois.

Phyllis Hall

1921-2008

A gathering of the friends and family of 44-year Carson City resident Phyllis Hall is 6-8 p.m. today at FitzHenry's Funeral Home, 3954 Fairview Drive. Mrs. Hall died April 6, 2008, at her home in Las Vegas.

A memorial service is 4 p.m. Saturday at the LDS Church, C-Hill Building, 1331 McKay Drive in Carson City.

Born May 5, 1921, in Logan, Utah, to Charles Israel and Sarah Bernhisel Stoddard, she married Reid J. Hall on Feb. 23, 1943 in Logan.

Mrs. Hall received a bachelor's degree from Utah State University and taught chemistry at North Cache High School in Richmond, Utah. She was a former flight attendant for United Airlines. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was the organist and choir director for the Carson City First Ward for 25 years. She was a former National Officer of Kappa Delta Sorority. She was a homemaker, and she enjoyed oil painting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Reid, in 2005 and by her infant son Phillip in 1950.

Mrs. Hall is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Mary and Jerald Brown of Kingston, Wash., Jane and Tifton Heupel of Las Vegas and Anne and Dennis Hunsaker of Las Vegas; sons and daughters-in-law John and Marsha Hall of Carson City and David and Joey Hall of Genoa.

Donald Bruce

Henderson

1955-2008

A memorial service is 3 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church for native Nevadan Donald Bruce Henderson, 52, who died April 3, 2008, after a battle with cancer.

Born June 11, 1955, in Reno, he had a love of the outdoors, including fishing, camping, gardening and golfing.

He was former meat manager for Costco and had cut meat for 30 years.

He is survived by his daughter Heather Sophia Henderson; brother Wayne Robin Henderson; ex-wife Barbara Crawford; and dogs Colonel and Snickers.

Crawford said she would miss his skill a father, his sense of humor, his strength, his confidence and his faith.

"As Heather and I make the rest of our journey through life we will remember to be strong like he was," she said.

Crawford and Henderson thanked St. Mary's Hospice and Sierra Caregivers for their help.
