This is the second year for Family Support Council to take part in the Pinwheels for Prevention program that seeks to increase awareness about child abuse and neglect. Pinwheels representing each child abuse report filed during the previous calendar year are planted in front of courthouses, government offices, schools, playgrounds, libraries and parks. During April, many businesses will take part in offering patrons a pinwheel to raise awareness about child abuse.
Preventing child abuse means setting the stage for healthy, stable families who have the tools they need for nurturing children. Help the community understand prevention. Ask elected officials to support programs and services that help families and children. Contact your local school district and faith community. Children who are abused may show physical and behavioral signs. You may be a child's only line to safety. Pay attention to the treatment of children around you. Child abuse is everyone's business. The Family Support Council of Douglas County holds free weekly classes and workshops on subjects such as parenting through divorce, effective parenting, surviving your teen, how to discipline children and toddler activities of music, massage and crafts.
Family Support Council's parenting classes are for anyone raising children up to 18 years old. Classes give parents information, techniques and tools to provide a nurturing environment of care and security.
Parents, grandparents and relatives may enroll for classes and workshops. There is a $10 fee for materials, workshops are fee. Free baby-sitting with preregistration.
