Nevada attorney general to speak at candlelight vigil

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez-Masto is the guest speaker for the 10th annual candlelight vigil Oct. 1 to raise awareness of domestic violence.

The event, sponsored by the Purple Ribbon Coalition and the Family Support Council, is set for 6 p.m. at Heritage Park in Gardnerville.

Douglas County District Attorney Mark Jackson also is to speak at the event.

Kristie Traver, Family Support Council executive director, will host the event which features the Douglas County Sheriff's Office color guard, dignitaries, clergy and community members.

As has been the tradition for the last several years, participants will carry lit candles to commemorate victims of domestic violence.

Bagpiper Rick James is scheduled to play "Amazing Grace."

This year the event has been moved from Lampe Park to Heritage Park.

Doves are to be released to symbolize freedom for domestic violence victims.

The event is in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the Family Support Council.

Refreshments will be served and the public is invited.
