JV/Frosh Roundup: Tiger freshmen roll to win

Bolstered by some outstanding play from its special teams units, the Douglas High School freshman football team beat South Tahoe 58-0 on Saturday.

The Tigers got a kick return touchdown and a punt return touchdown from Colton Hughes and Austin Neddenreip returned another punt for a touchdown to lead the way.

Ryen Ake scored four touchdowns on the ground and Cameron Jorgenson recovered a fumble in the end zone for another score.

The Tiger defense clamped down and allowed almost no yardage. Douglas improved to 8-0 overall on the season.

The Douglas junior varsity girls' soccer team faced its biggest rival in the Carson Senators on the Keith Roman Field Thursday evening and battled to a 2-2 tie.

Douglas dominated the first half by consistently beating Carson to the ball. Jillian Brune scored the initial goal for the Tigers in the tenth minute with a beautiful kick from the right side into the net. The Tigers scored again, this time from the other side of the field as Jennifer Gorton passed to Briana Rutherdale who sent a long shot over the goalie's head.

Goalkeeper Aleassa Anzelone preserved the 2-0 halftime lead by charging and deflecting the ball from a Carson player who was poised to score on a breakaway.

Carson played aggressively in the second half and the Senators scored after several shots on goal. Anzelone appeared to have secured the victory for Douglas in the final minutes as she leaped and made a difficult save. But with thirty seconds left in the game, the Senators charged the goal following a throw-in, and put a loose ball in to tie the score at two.

Coach Amanda Mikulich commented that although the team was disappointed, the JV girls played with a lot of courage, heart and determination. Douglas stands at 7-2-1 in league play and 11-3-1 for the season.
