Pedestrian in Friday evening fatality identified

The woman killed in a Friday night incident at Highway 395 and Pine Valley Road has been identified as Nadine Thornburg, 41, of Gardnerville.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office identified the victim of the accident today.

Thornburg was killed after she reportedly ran out in front of a southbound tractor trailer rig.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, driver Richard Kevin Zeff of Lexington, N.C. was driving the 2004 Freightliner when Thornburg, who was walking east on Pine Valley Road, ran in front of the truck.

Zeff tried to avoid the woman, but she ended up being hit by the rear wheels.

The truck is owned by Schneider Trucking out of Gary, Ind.

"We will wait for the coroner's report about the pedestrian and are still investigating why she was on the highway," Trooper Scott Simon said Saturday.

Investigators restricted traffic at the site for more than five hours on Friday evening.

Anyone who witnessed the event is encouraged to contact the highway patrol at 688-2500 or 687-0400.
