Children's Book Week events at Borders on Saturday

The Friends of the Douglas County Library celebrate Children's Book Week on Saturday, at Borders Books, 911 Topsy Lane, Carson City. Volunteers from the Share a Book read aloud program at Meneley Elementary School in Gardnerville provide children's story times in the children's section at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The Borders shopping fundraiser to benefit the Friends of the Douglas County Library will be held throughout the day. Those who wish to participate must present a coupon for the fundraiser when they make their purchases at Borders. Copies of the coupon are available at the Douglas County Public Libraries in Minden and Zephyr Cove and from the library Web site: douglas.lib.nv.us. Participants in the fundraiser will receive a 10 percent discount on purchases that day and the Friends of the Library will receive 10 percent of the net sales raised from participants' coupons.

This week is Children's Book Week, a national annual event in which local communities create a variety of events designed to instill a love of reading in children.

This year's theme is "Rise up Reading" and is sponsored by the Children's Book Council. Visit the Children's Book Council at cbcbooks.org. For a list of Children's Book Week events, to douglas.lib.nv.us.

The Share a Book read aloud program was initiated in January, 2006, at Meneley in conjunction with the Douglas County Public Library. Trained volunteers visit classrooms weekly to read aloud to students.
