The Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a $17,000 grant to purchase new radar units to enforce laws against speeding and driving under the influence.
Capt. Mike Biaggini said the grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety paid for six new dash-mounted radar units, three hand-held radar units and two in-car cameras.
"The in-car cameras will by used by traffic enforcement officers to document traffic stops and record contacts with impaired drivers," Biaggini said.
"This form of documentation can be used in court to assist in the successful prosecution of impaired drivers," he said.
The radar units will replace older models with fewer capabilities and increase the number of units equipped with radar.
"Through this grant along with the sponsored training there will be more deputies on patrol with the capability of enforcing traffic laws within the county to assist in curtailing speeders and reduce the number of collisions," he said.
The sheriff's office will hold additional certification training in November for deputies who have not been trained in the use of radar.
"Without the assistance of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, the department would not be able to obtain this additional equipment to keep our streets safer," Biaggini said.
