Two seventh graders from St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School in Carson City generously donated more than 70 items to Austin's House. Kayley Taylor and Mia Cavilia worked as gift wrappers at Borders Books over the Christmas holidays as part of a community service project for the school. The two young ladies pooled their tip money and purchased books, puzzles and games for local children in need. Kayley and Mia recently donated these items to Austin's House.
Austin's House is located at 3589 North Sunridge Drive, behind the Douglas County Sheriff's Substation. Construction is nearly completed on this beautiful 5,382-square-foot residence formally known is the Carson Valley Children's Center. Austin's House will provide a safe home environment for up to 10 children from infants to age 17. It will accommodate both males and females who are unable to be maintained in their own homes. They will stay for a maximum of 45 days until they can be reunited with their families or placed in appropriate safe housing such as a foster home or with a relative. Austin's House will supply the basic living necessities for these children including proper nutrition, hygiene, rest, nurturing, companionship, recreation and education.
Austin's House is a partnership of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Douglas County Social Services, Douglas County Juvenile Probation Office, Douglas County Court Appointed Special Advocate Program and Partnership of Community Resources. Child Protective Services and the courts refer many of the children in need of safe shelter.
