Fire 55 percent contained

The 3,100-acre Angora fire is 55 percent contained as of 9 p.m. Wednesday, but firefighters are steeling themselves for predicted high winds that have yet to materialize.

Fire activity was light on all fronts but a predicted red flag warning is still in effect through Saturday and mandatory evacuations remain in effect while firefighters gauge the potential that the fire will jump the lines.

No forward spread is expected in the next 12 hours, but the chance of high winds raises the possibility that the fire will begin to move again.

At present the wind is south at 10-20 mph. Humidity is up to 20 percent.

According to the City of South Lake Tahoe's Web site, residents in the Gardner Mountain Area of South Lake Tahoe may return to their homes, but should be ready to evacuate if necessary. Mandatory evacuation still effects streets near the Tahoe Keys.

Carson Valley Middle School in Gardnerville has been designated a shelter location, according to the El Dorado Sheriff's Department.
