New antique store opens in downtown Gardnerville

Candy Stewart recently opened Yesterdays Antiques, Gifts and Collectibles.

Stewart lived in Southern California before relocating to Douglas County three years ago.

While in California, she spent 12 years working with Alzheimer's patients and families. When she moved, Stewart looked for a part-time job and began working at Old Town Antiques in Gardnerville, where she stayed for two and a half years before the building was sold to new owners and Stewart was forced to leave.

"We had become like a family," Stewart said of her and her Old Town coworkers. "We had to find a way to stay together."

Yesterdays Antiques, Gifts and Collectibles was born soon after. Stewart says she hopes her store will put Gardnerville on the map as a notable destination for antique stores.

"I want that to happen again," she said of making Carson Valley a hot spot for antique shoppers. "People are sent down from Lake Tahoe because they are told about the many antique stores here."

Stewart said her business stands out because it is "more than just an antique shop."

"We have quite a variety, from 1800s Western collectibles to Beatles memorabilia. We have everything, which is why we're called an antique, gifts and collectibles store."

Stewart and her family live in the Ruhenstroth area.

Stewart's husband David is a massage therapist at the Pink House in Genoa and their daughter Shannon is in the Air Force stationed at Edwards Air Force Base. Their other daughter Megan attends community college.

Yesterdays Antiques, Gifts and Collectibles is located at 1402 A Highway 395, Gardnerville. Business hours are Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday noon-5 p.m.

There will be a grand opening Aug. 4 during the Taste of Gardnerville.
