Highway 208 reopened

As of 9:18 p.m., Highway 208 has reopened through Topaz Ranch Estates. The highway was closed 3 p.m. today when flames threatened to jump it and spread into the southern county community.

The highway was closed for much of the evening at Holbrook Junction and Wellington as residents were urged to leave their homes when the fire hit its peak. Spot fires developed on the north side of Highway 208 near Sapphire Road and Opal Court.

The fire, which was ignited at 1:54 p.m. by dry lightning turned away from the community at about 5 p.m.

A temporary shelter for those who evacuated has been set up at Smith Valley High School.

East Fork career and volunteer firefighters from Topaz Ranch Estates, Topaz Lake, Fish Springs, Ruhenstroth, the Gardnerville Ranchos, Sheridan Acres, Johnson Lane responded to the fire along with U.S. Forest Service, Mason Valley, Bureau of Land Mangement, Nevada Division of Forestry.
