The R-C Morning Report

A high wind advisory kicks in at 10 a.m. today and is expected to last until 10 p.m. Sustained winds of 15-30 mph with gusts of up to 50 mph are expected in the Valley with gusts of up to 60 mph in wind prone and foothill areas.

Drivers of high profile vehicles should exercise caution on north-south routes, such as highways 395 and 88. You can bet Washoe Valley will be closed to motorhomes and semi rigs. Once the winds stop, there's a 60 percent chance of snow showers.

No one who travels Highway 395 north through the Valley needs me to mention the traffic signal at Stephanie Way is finished and will soon be activated. That's because there are big signs announcing the impending event. But that won't stop me from putting it here.

Speaking of signs, there sure do seem to be a lot of billboards still standing on Washoe Tribal land south of Gardnerville. Weren't they on their way out to make way for a Wal-Mart? I'm sure they are just taking their time about it or something.

Gardnerville dentist Mike Fischer is back in public life with his appointment as director of the State Department of Cultural Affairs. I remember his last day as a Douglas County commissioner when he came to the meeting dressed in a top hat and tuxedo. Gov. Gibbons couldn't have made a better choice for the job. I think he should do the position in character myself. Dangberg or Sparks, it would make great copy.
