Dr. James Windsor Decker


1928-2007


A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Spruce and Deseret Street, Minden, with a viewing at 10 a.m., for Dr. James Windsor Decker, 78, who died Feb. 21, 2007, at his home in Minden.


Dr. Decker was born Aug. 30, 1928, in Minneapolis, Minn. to James Garfield and Helen Griselda Dowe Decker. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis with a BA in 1950; University of Minnesota Medical School in 1954. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Assistant Chief of Medical Service, Camp Irwin, Calif. He married Eileen Jones Decker Feb. 2 1990 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Minden. He was a resident of Minden for 28 years.


He did his internship at Los Angeles County General Hospital from 1954-1955 with residencies at the University of Minnesota Medical School Investigator, Department of Medicine 1952; U.S. Army-Medical Officer 1955-1957; Los Angeles County General Hospital-Resident Physician in Pathology from 1957-1961.


He spent his working career as a pathologist. He was the director of the laboratory at Carson-Tahoe Hospital, Carson City; director of laboratory Churchill Public Hospital, Fallon; director of laboratory, Reno Medical Plaza, Reno.


Dr. Decker was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; The Lahontan Basin Medical Society; The American College of Pathology; The American Society of Clinical Pathologists and The Nevada Society of Pathologists.


He was also a member of the Nevada Stock Dog Club; the Nevada Farm Bureau; Carson Valley Little League Coach; Pop Warner Football Coach and girls softball coach. He was president of the Douglas High School Football Boosters and an avid booster of the University of Nevada Wolf Pack basketball team.


Dr. Decker was preceded in death by his father in 1960 in Minneapolis, Minn.; his mother, in Gardnerville in 1993; his step brothers Richard Decker in Michigan and Robert Decker in Los Angeles.


He is survived by his wife Eileen Decker of Minden; daughter Helen E. Bagley and her husband Vic of Reno and grandchildren Kim, Natalie, Russell; son Michael and his wife Jaimie Decker of Eugene, Ore. and grandson Owen; daughter Sarah Decker also of Eugene; step-children Ken and Ashly Manke of Reno, Tamara and Tim Perko of Minden, Jacqueline and Roy Foster of Reno, Bill and Melissa Manke of Carson City; grandchildren Jeromy, Kortnie, Krystie, Kasie, James, Jason, Chelsea, Jessica and Scott, Nicolette and Brett, Michael, Katie, Abigail, Zachary, Logan, Joe, Mackenzie, Jacob, Gabriel and Madalyn.


Arrangements are in the care of Walton's Funeral Home, Carson City. Burial will take place at the Mottsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville.
