Girls' Basketball: Lady Tigers cruise against Wooster

Once they had a chance to get their full-court press set up, the Douglas High girls' basketball team was just fine.

After falling back 7-0 early on, the Lady Tigers blistered past the Wooster Colts 52-34 in the Sierra League opener for both teams Tuesday night in Minden.

Douglas fell victim to a number of early miscues, and after briefly closing the score to 7-4 with a basket from Jessica Waggoner and two free throws from Dany Heidt, Wooster pulled out to an 11-4 lead to finish the quarter.

Douglas put together an 11-4 run to open the second quarter, however, and with every basket the Tigers had more of an opportunity to set up their press.

Following a pair of Wooster baskets at the three-minute mark, Douglas closed out the half on a 7-0 run to take a 22-19 lead.

The Tigers didn't look back from there. Douglas ran a 15-4 stretch through the start of the third and used an 11-2 run to start the fourth to put the game away.

Douglas had a monster game from Jessica Waggoner, who scored 21 points almost exclusively in the paint.

Bridget Maestretti finished with nine and Taryn Williams, Heidt and Sarah Hartley each chipped in six.

Helen Fillmore and Gina Pfaffenberger rounded out Douglas' scoring with two points apiece.

Douglas improved to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in league play with the win and will host Elko Friday night at 5.
