County voters must decideairport's future

It has been 50 years since Minden-Tahoe Airport could be described as truly commercial.

There was a time when the airport was the hub for Carson City and Douglas County and the chief transportation center for Nevada's capital.

That's not really much considering both communities would have a hard time mustering 10,000 people between them, Lyon and Storey counties.

It was lack of use that closed the Valley's first commercial airline in the airport's first decade.

Carson Valley residents have been concerned about the use of the airport since its creation during World War II.

That concern rose to a crescendo 23 years ago as a result of a successful campaign to limit its size.

Keeping the airport small has been a point of contention ever since.

The real question in the debate over the Minden-Tahoe Airport won't be solved until voters decide the fate of the weight ordinance.

That question should be formulated to provide clear direction on the fate of the airport. Only then will the debate over its use finally be put to rest.
