Grizzly tennis teams fare well against Tiger boys and girls

The Douglas girls' tennis match-up with Galena was cut short by rain Thursday afternoon, though two rounds were completed in Reno.

Out of 12 sets, Douglas won only 2 games.

Amelia Ritger, won big, beating Galena's Hailey Llop 6-1.

In the second round, doubles partners Sarah Barnhill and Lauren Seymour pulled out a 6-4 win.

"The girls played very well against a very skilled and experienced team. Most played better in the second set," said Douglas tennis coach Roger Rusmisel. "It was a great learning experience for our team."

Rain couldn't save the Douglas Tigers boys tennis team from being defeated 12-4 by the Galena Grizzlies at home.

Douglas No. 2 singles seed Robert Shawhan was the lone victor in the first round, defeating Galena's Shane Leeder 6-1, according to Douglas Coach Mark McLaughlin.

In the second round, first seed singles player Keagan Chipp beat Leeder 6-2. Chipp's chance in the third round against Galena was rained out. Shawhan was leading Galena's Jeremy Grubbs 4-1 when that match was rained out.

In doubles action, the Tigers didn't get a win until the third round when Spike Neri and Andrew Soloman defeated Galena's third seed and second seed Tigers Marshall Jessup and Tim Doran defeated Galena's first seed.

Douglas boys' record is 1-1. Galena improved to 2-0.
