Golf: Tigers capture first league tournament

The Douglas High School girls' golf team entered the Sierra League season knowing it was the team to beat.

The Tigers went out and proved it during the season-opener at Wolf Run Golf Course in Reno Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman Bethany Wurster, senior Katie Gettman and sophomore Heather Henderson swept the top three spots in order as Douglas cruised to the tournament win with a team score of 470 " six strokes ahead of runner-up Carson.

"I'm extremely proud of these girls for what they have accomplished," Douglas coach Steve Gustafson said. "This is a big deal for our team.

"To see Bethany come out in her first tournament as a freshman, playing against veteran players, and win the thing is a great accomplishment for her. It's going to be a fun ride the remainder of the season."

Wurster shot an 80 to take individual medalist honors.

She had a tap-in birdie of less than one inch on the par-3 No. 14.

"She was excited because this is the closest she has ever come to a hole in one," Gustafson said.

Gettman was close on Wurster's heels, shooting an 81 on the afternoon. She sank a short putt on the par-5 No. 18 for a birdie, closing out a back nine score of 38.

Henderson shot an 85, hitting a lot of fairways and greens in regulation.

Michelle Nikkels, who was the team's No. 1 for a good portion of last season, shot a 95 and Rachel Merino shot a 129.

South Tahoe took third with a 536, Reno was fourth with a 563 and Damonte Ranch took fifth with a 592.

Douglas travels to the Northgate Golf Club Tuesday.
