New middle schoolers learn ropes

New Carson Valley Middle School seventh graders got a chance to familiarize themselves with their new stomping ground Tuesday morning during the school's annual orientation.

Escorted by their parents, students entered the front hall to find their ninth-grade peers distributing class schedules and locker assignments.

When asked what advice she could give to new students, Devyn Hotho, a freshman helping distribute orientation materials, said, "Have fun, and enjoy the time you have."

Twelve-year-old Colton Witt stood in the front lobby with his mother looking over his new schedule, trying to figure out where his new classes would be.

"I am excited but nervous," he said. When asked what class he was most looking forward to, Witt replied, "Science."

With new schedules in hand, seventh graders braved the crowded halls of the school building, visiting with peers and other parents, eventually making their way to C Hall, the northern wing of the school where most seventh grade classes are held.

Standing near the south wall of C Hall, 12-year-old Kendall Uber looked out into a sea of anxious 7th graders.

"I am excited about meeting new friends," she said.

Uber also expressed interest in her new art class, and the chance to play volleyball and basketball. Although, she did say she wasn't happy about having to wake up early.

Carson Valley Middle School, along with Pau-Wa-Lu and Douglas High, begin classes Monday morning. All Douglas elementary schools start classes today.
