They came, they shopped

There were 59 children, each with $100 in hand, who shopped for school clothes at Carson Valley Wal-Mart on Saturday as part of the children's shopping spree sponsored by the Sierra Nevada Women's Active 20-30 Club.

The women's club combined with the men's Carson Valley No. 85 20-30 Club to raise funds to take the children shopping.

"This is our fifth year doing the shopping spree and our second year with Wal-Mart," said Shannon Johnson of the Sierra Nevada Women's Active 20-30 Club. "Wal-Mart gave us $2,500 to go toward shopping costs. They are great supporters."

The clubs raised $6,000 for the shopping day that started with breakfast at McDonald's. Each child was matched with volunteers and offered the opportunity to purchase school clothes and shoes. The 20-30 Club donated $100 to the Family Support Council for school supplies for the Project School Days project.

The Family Support Council of Douglas County chose the children who participated based on income level and family need.
