At the Lake: Redevelopment plans include pedestrian overpass

An overpass and its effect on the streetscape top the list of changes to come before the South Tahoe Redevelopment Agency when it reviews an updated convention center project.

The $410 million convention center project " the city's largest redevelopment proposal due to start next month " will involve landscaping with native plants, sidewalks, retaining walls and a pedestrian overpass on Highway 50 within view of the Friday Avenue signal.

Even though South Lake Tahoe is a relatively small town and regarded as safe, sexual assaults still happen. Nine cases of felony sexual assaults were prosecuted by the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office last year. Seven of those cases resulted in conviction.

Today is international Denim Day, a sexual assault awareness effort created in 1999 as a protest of an Italian Supreme Court decision to overturn a rape conviction. Denim Day is recognized throughout the United States and the world. Tribune reporter Michelle Morton explains efforts here at the South Shore to bring awareness to this sensitive subject.

The 2007 board of directors of the Tahoe Resource Conservation District was announced recently. The district works for the general public interest and benefits by providing soil and water conservation, control of runoff, prevention and control of soil erosion and stabilization, protection of water quality and reclamation.

The El Dorado County Mental Health Department will move into a new office and clinic facilities. Offices at 2489 Lake Tahoe Blvd., 2074 Lake Tahoe Blvd., and 1120 Third St. will close noon Saturday to move to their new location.
