Genoa fire cause a mystery

The cause of a fire that destroyed a Genoa home on Sept. 20 can't be determined, according to fire investigator Capt. Terry Taylor.

Taylor said he can determine that the fire started in the kitchen-dining room of the home occupied by Ted and Katie O'Neill at about 4 a.m.

"I can tell where it started within six feet because of the damage, but there was nothing left on, the stove in there was gas-fired, so there was no wood stove. I eliminated the appliances because they were all victims of the fire."

Taylor said the fire was clearly accidental.

"It wasn't arson and it's not a drug lab," he said. "I can't tell what it was because of the destruction caused by the fire."

Genoans are gathering at the Orchard House 1-4 p.m. Saturday to help out O'Neills.

Folks from all over are encouraged to come out, listen to some music, eat some barbecue and leave what they can for a donation, host Randy Falcke said.

For those who can't make it to Genoa on Saturday, an account has been established on the couple's behalf at U.S. Bank.

Donations may be made at any branch to account No. 153752186392.

Unlike the Genoa fire, Taylor said a fire on Bowles Lane in the Gardnerville Ranchos was clearly caused by a natural gas instant water heater that malfunctioned.

Carbon monoxide and smoke built up and caused the garage door to blow off.
