I graduated from the National Sheriff's Institute at the University of Southern California in 1980 and from the FBI's National Academy in 1982. An additional curriculum of the academy consisted of courses in abnormal psychology/criminal profiling, government budgets, and constitutional law. I currently hold teaching credentials in Nevada and California, having taught courses in constitutional law, Spanish, physiological symptoms of drug influence, and courtroom testimony. In 1992, I graduated from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif., passing all proficiency examinations in Spanish. Since being elected justice of the peace in 1994 I have completed 1,100 hours of continuing legal education, primarily at the National Judicial College. I am certified in two areas, including mediation. I have taught aspects of fine collections for the National Center for State Courts.

Platform: In addition to knowledge of the law, it takes leadership, common sense, and a willingness to listen to be an effective judge.

My experience as justice of the peace for 12 years, my many years of experience in other relevant areas (including law enforcement and management of large agency operations), and my accomplishments as an officer of the court make me the best-qualified candidate for this office. I am particularly proud of the success of the Department of Alternative Sentencing that I started in 1997 to hold defendants accountable to the court. It is regarded as extremely successful and is a model for other courts around the country.

The 28 years I spent in law enforcement helped prepare me for dealing fairly and objectively with the people who come before the court. This background has proved invaluable to me as a judge.

I am active in the fight against drug abuse and addiction. I recently started an Addiction Impact Panel, in concert with the Douglas County Family Support Council, to fight methamphetamine use and other drug addiction.

My roots in the Carson Valley run deep. Lynn and I have lived in Douglas County for over 29 years and have raised our family here. We are deeply committed to protecting our community's exceptional quality of life, for the benefit of our family and yours.

I have the knowledge, ability, experience, and skill required to handle any of the cases that may come before the justice court Ð criminal, non-civil, or civil.
