Old Guys Basketball


Men 35 and older interested in playing pickup basketball are invited to the basketball court in the Pastoral Center at St. Gall Catholic Church every Sunday at 4 p.m. and Wednesday at 7 p.m.


After teams are chosen, games go either full-court or half-court depending on how many show up. The sessions are strictly for fun and exercise.


Cost is $50, which is donated to the church for court upkeep. The sessions run from Septembet to June.

High Sierra Flycasters


The monthly meeting of the High Sierra Flycasters will be held Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at Carson Valley Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Road in Gardnerville.


Speaking at this month's meeting will be Chad Mellison, fish and wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, United State Department of the Interior.


He will be speaking on the activities of U.S. Fish and Wildlife in the Eastern Sierra with an emphasis on the poisoning of Silver King Creek and the reintroduction of Paiute Cutthroat Trout to the stream.


Fly-tying demonstrations will be offered at 6:30 p.m.




Junior golf clinic


The Carson Valley Junior Golf program will conduct a six-week program that teaches the fundamentals of golf including etiquette, putting, chipping and full swing. Of course, participants will receive plenty of time on the golf course.


Juniors will attend the clinic at least once a week at the Carson Valley Golf Club.


Cost is $120 and includes clubs, instruction, snacks, golf goodies and a certificate of completion.

Hunter safety class


A hunter safety class will be Sept. 30 at the Nevada Cooperative Extension Building, 1329 Waterloo Lane, across from Lampe Park in Gardnerville. Class size is limited. Participants must pre-register and complete a workbook prior to the class.


The class, which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will focus on gun safety, wilderness survival and hunting ethics. Successful participants will receive their hunter certificate at the end of class.


Participants must be at least 11 years old. You must be 12 or older to purchase a Nevada hunting license. For more information contact:

Nevada Lightning softball tryouts


The Nevada Lightning girls' fastpitch softball 12-under team is looking for experienced tournament players for the 2006 fall and 2007 seasons.


Tryouts will be conducted through September.
