Pearl's Curls Salon opens in northern Carson Valley

"Pearl's Curls" rolled off the tongue when it was time to name the new salon.

The name of Sharon Wilkinson's new hair salon, Pearl's Curls Salon and Ruthie's Boutique came from her granddaughters' names, Savanah Pearl and Grace Ruth.

The Wilkinsons had been in their house for three years when Wilkinson decided she wanted to run a hair salon out of her home. Her husband Ed remodeled what was once a catch-all room next to the garage into an attractive and comfortable space for a hair salon and boutique.

"I said, 'I'm going to do hair at my residence,'" said Wilkinson. "Ed can do it all and built me this gorgeous little shop.

"I wanted to be at home so I could do my painting and can be available at home. More and more people want to work from their homes," she said.

Pearl's Curls offers flexible hours, reasonable rates and convenience - especially for people who live in the Johnson Lane/Stephanie Way area.

"I want to have flexible hours for the working gal who wants to come in after work," she said.

Wilkinson did hair for 14 years, took a break for several years, but kept her hand in hair styling by doing her friends' hair.

She does hair cuts for men, women and children. Wilkinson said she likes to do color - highlights, weaves - and perms.

Wilkinson said she finds a creative outlet in doing hair and painting.

"I like to paint landscapes that will eventually be sold in the boutique," she said.

A assortment of handmade items will be sold on the Ruthie's Boutique side of the shop - one-stroke painting on glassware and cards, crocheted scarves, beaded jewelry, candles, homemade preserves and gift baskets for the holidays.

There will be a chance to meet Wilkinson and visit her new shop at a grand opening event from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Refreshments will be served.

Pearl's Curls Salon and Ruthie's Boutique is at Melborn Way and Wildhorse Lane.
