The R-C Morning Report

Genoans will explore expanding the town to include adjoining parcels.

Saying no one is being annexed yet, the Genoa Town Board approved a measure that would allow the county to examine the benefits and pitfalls of annexing portions of the surrounding countryside.

Proponent Bill Brooks made the point that there are only 200 people in Genoa, but the town would be surrounded by up to 3,000 people.

The proposal includes property along the base of the Sierra all the way from Walley's in the south to the former Harvey's Ranch in the north. The town could also look at parcels extending east across the Carson River.

Tonight, Minden Town Board members will discuss seeking historic district status so that the county can exempt the town from an ordinance that requires casinos to have at least 100 rooms.

The town isn't actually forming a historic district, such as exists in Genoa, Carson City or the Comstock. It's really just looking for a way to protect a proposal to lease the former C.O.D. Garage to a casino. Both Minden and Gardnerville have been pretty clear that they oppose the ordinance being proposed by the Carson Valley Inn, Topaz Lodge and Sharkey's.

OK, it was 66 degrees outside at 11:30 p.m. last night. At sunrise the temperature was 50. Today's high is supposed to hit 90 with the lows in the high 40s, but it seems hotter than that. Perhaps we should try Hot September nights. The tomato cam is showing the vines are flourishing on Sept. 6 in Genoa. They should totally be dead by now. We'll see how long they survive.
