Lady Tigers knot Vikings up at 2

The Douglas girls' soccer team remained undefeated at home Saturday, tying the tough South Tahoe Vikings 2-2 to run their record to 7-5-4 overall and 5-3-3 in league play.

Douglas gave up an early goal, but recovered to hold the Vikings at bay for most of the rest of the game.

"The girls were very calm heading into the game," Douglas coach Lorraine Fitzhugh said. "They were almost too calm, but they played with a lot of poise and really turned on the intensity as the game progressed.

"The team defense was great and we did a good job of transitioning into our offense. It was very efficient for us today."

Morgan LeFever knotted the game up at one in the 30th minute with an unassisted goal. She scored again two minutes out of halftime on an assist from Tina Dantin, putting the Tigers in the lead before South Tahoe was able to answer 13 minutes later to complete the scoring.

LeFever's two goals moved her into fourth all-time on both the Northern 4A and Douglas lists for goals in a career with 48.

She passed up Hannah Sullivan (47) Saturday and sits two goals behind Michelle Shearer (50) with three games remaining in the regular season. The school and region records belong to former Douglas standout Julie Spaulding (55).

"Morgan is just a spicy, committed, intense player," Fitzhugh said. "She's very strong when she's out there, but even though she's chasing this record, she's willing to give the ball up when someone has a better shot, which is much to her credit."

Incidentally, LeFever's 18 goals on the year rank eighth all-time in the Northern 4A (Besette, Carson, 23) and sixth all-time at Douglas (Sullivan, 21).

Fitzhugh specifically noted Dantin's play Saturday as well.

"Tina has been strong on defense all year for us and she goes out there and wins her slide tackles and does a good job distributing the ball," she said.

Goalie Jamie Greer also had an outstanding game in net for the Tigers, making five saves, a number of which were of the highlight reel quality.

"Jamie has been growing into a great keeper for us," Fitzhugh said. "She shows a lot of leadership out there and she really acts as a coach on the field and at halftime. She has great vision of the field. She had an awesome game."

Douglas took on Hug Tuesday afternoon.
