Digest: Carson Valley Men's Golf Club results



The Carson Valley Men's Golf Club hosted an individual stroke play tournament at the Carson Valley Golf Course last week.


Jeff Schreiber took first place in the A flight with a 63, Roger Hala took second with a 65 and Charles Serafine Jr. and Matthew Budjako shot 70s to tie for third.


In the B flight, John R. Miller shot a 68 to take first and Chuck Householder, David Dick and Peter Youngdahl each shot a 70 to tie for second.


Stan Sherwood won the C flight with a 64, Ray Gardiol shot a 66 to take second, Jim Powell shot a 69 to take third and Larry Lockwood took fourth with a 70.

Lil' Tiger workouts


The Douglas High School boys' basketball team will be hosting a series of open gym workouts for boys and girls grades three through nine at the Douglas High gym.


Workouts run from 8 to 10 a.m. on Oct. 14 and 21.


Cost is $20 per workout.


Instruction will be provided by the boys' basketball coaching staff and several of the Tiger basketball players will be on hand as counselors.


Registration will be taken at the door.




Girls' softball elections


The Carson Valley Girls Softball Association is seeking candidates for various board positions.


A meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 12 at A-Sign Shop, 1421-A Industrial Way, Gardnerville, to elect members to fill the positions.


Anyone interested in filling a board position must attend the meeting.

Winter Sports Clearance


The 2006-07 winter sports season is just around the corner.


Students interested in participating in a winter sport at Douglas High School must obtain clearance through the athletic department prior to any participation.


A clearance night for winter sports has been scheduled for Oct. 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Douglas High School commons.


The mandatory extracurricular drug policy presentation is at 6 p.m. on that same evening.


The athlete, along with at least one of their parent/legal guardians, must attend the presentation.


If the athlete or the parent/legal guardian is not in attendance, the athlete will not be able to try out.


Students planning to participate in a spring sport are also encouraged to attend the October clearance. Douglas Student Body Cards will be sold at the clearance night as well.

Douglas in-line roller hockey


The youth division of the Northern Nevada Inline Roller Hockey League is scheduled to begin in November 2006.


Club teams for varsity and junior varsity are being formed to represent the Douglas County area against teams from other schools in the region.


Students in seventh through 12th grade are invited to participate.

Major leaguers coming to Valley


The Coalition for a Boys & Girls Club in Carson Valley will host the first annual Go to Bat World Series party Oct. 21 at the Carson Valley Inn's Shannon Ball Room.


Scheduled to appear are a number of former and current Major League Baseball players, including former Douglas High standout Shawn Estes of the San Diego Padres.


Also slated to attend are Jeff Fassero (San Diego), Rich Aurilla, Royce Clayton and Brad Lesley of the Cincinnati Reds, Bill Mueller of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bill North of the 1974 Oakland A's and Gary Bell of the Cleveland Indians World Series team.


Festivities will include a family autograph session scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. on Oct. 21 at CVIC Hall. 120 Louisville Slugger World Series Edition miniature bats will be available to purchase. The Major Leaguers will be on hand to sign autographs.


Dinner highlights will include stadium food stations, raffle and silent and live auctions.


Attendance at the evening's party is limited to adults only.


Tickets are $40 per person. Corporate sponsorships are available upon request.


Ticket purchase includes the chance to win a four-night Ensenada cruise for two.


Tickets may be purchased at Nevada State Bank, Edward Jones office locations, Carson Valley Accounting and the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Authority.


All proceeds will benefit and help establish a Boys & Girls Club chapter in Carson Valley.

Old Guys Basketball


Men 35 and older interested in playing pickup basketball are invited to the basketball court in the Pastoral Center at St. Gall Catholic Church every Sunday at 4 p.m. and Wednesday at 7 p.m.


After teams are chosen, games go either full-court or half-court depending on how many show up. The sessions are strictly for fun and exercise.


Cost is $50, which is donated to the church for court upkeep. The sessions run from September to June.
