Mary 'Adele'


Squires Davis


1918-2006


A memorial service is 11 a.m. Monday at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah, for Mary "Adele" Squires Davis, 88, who died Sept. 29, 2006, at her home in Ivins, Utah.


Mrs. Davis was born Aug. 13, 1918, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Leslie "Les" Squires and Chloe "Young" Squires. Growing up on Harvard Avenue, she graduated from East High School and she received a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah in 1941. She was a lifelong member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. She married Newell P. Davis in November 1941 and after two years in San Diego and Santa Ana as a Marine Corps wife during WWII, she and her husband moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1947, where together they owned and operated a travel agency for 25 years.


She was a contributing member of the Children's Orthopedic Hospital Guild. Upon their retirement, the couple moved to Ivins, Utah.


She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Gordon Squires.


She is survived by her husband of 64 years; their sons, Randall Kent Davis of Gardnerville and Richard Newell Davis of Minden and granddaughters, Heather Nicole Davis of South Lake Tahoe and Janel Adena Davis of Reno.

Charles S. 'Chuck' Jacobs


1929-2006


Charles S. "Chuck" Jacobs, 77, a long-time Gardnerville resident, died Sept. 30, 2006, at his home.


Mr. Jacobs was born June 24, 1929. He grew up on a family ranch on the Sweetwater River in Wyoming.


He owned the Union Bar, managed the Noble Hotel, and was casino manager for Barney's until a car accident left him disabled. Before moving to Gardnerville, Mr. Jacobs lived at Lake Tahoe and in Lander, Wyo. He belonged to the Elks Club.


He enjoyed gardening, growing giant pumpkins, cutting wood in Hope Valley, music and playing cards.


He rode in the rodeo and was a pickup man.


He was preceded in death by his sisters Levis, Louise and Edna.


Among his survivors are his wife, Shirlee Jacobs of Gardnerville; daughter and son-in-law Shayleen and Jim Snyder of Loveland, Colo.; daughters Celynn Jacobs and Lyle Beatty of Sparks; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Tonie Jacobs of Gardnerville; four granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; five nieces; and caregivers Pedro Leon, Rick Brennan, Mike Cady and Cliff Brewer.


Memorial donations may be made to the Kids & Horses Therapeutic Riding Center, 2869 Esaw St., Minden, NV 89423. At his request, no services will be held.

John William Larsen


1934-2006


A funeral service will be 2 p.m. today at Bethlehem Lutheran Church for John W. Larsen, 72, who died Oct. 1, 2006, in Reno, after a short battle with cancer.


Mr. Larsen was born May 1,1934, at Columbia Hospital in Seattle. The oldest of five children of William John Larsen and Gladys Finley Larsen, he grew up in Seattle. He spent his summers on Whidbey Island. He attended Lincoln High School, joining the U. S. Navy in 1951 and sent to Camp Pendleton, Calif., and then to Point Loma for basic and further training. He served as a medical corpsman in Korea at the end of the Korean War. After receiving his honorable discharge in 1955, he returned to Seattle, where he met Joann Virginia Barker. They were married on Jan. 14, 1956; this year they celebrated their 50th anniversary.


Mr. Larsen began his civilian career at Vesojas Marine Supply on Lake Union in Seattle. In 1961, he moved his family to California, where they lived in the Bay area for a number of years while he worked as a petroleum equipment sales representative. Later they moved to Los Angeles, where he was employed by Bennett Pump as a sales representative. In 1972, he opened his own petroleum equipment distribution business, Petroleum Dynamics Inc. Located in downtown Los Angeles, PDI was a successful company with a respected name in the petroleum equipment field for more than 20 years, employing over 25 full-time employees.


He and his wife raised a family of three children in the Los Angeles suburb of Chatsworth before retiring to Minden in 2002, where Mr. Larsen continued to work-part time at Kick Start until two weeks before his death. He was a church elder for more than 25 years in three churches in two denominations, the Presbyterian Church in America and the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. Until recently, he was an elder at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Carson City. He was also a regular Sunday School teacher and served on the school board of Sierra Lutheran High School.


Mr. Larsen was a second generation descendent of Norwegian immigrants and was extremely proud of his heritage. He loved to celebrate May 17, Norway's National Day, and, when he heard the King of Norway was visiting Los Angeles, took his entire family downtown to see the king.


Mr. Larsen is survived by Joann Larsen, his wife of 50 years, and their three children, Stephen Larsen of Hanlon, Wash., Mary Jo Wohlers of Springfield, Va, and Sarah Crawford of Canyon Country, Calif; 13 grandchildren Samuel Larsen, Rebecca Longstreet, Susanne Miller, Naomi Larsen, Rachel, Julia and Jessica Wohlers, Katye, Tyler, Paige, and Christyna Castan, and Curtis and Luke Crawford; and one great-grandchild Kadin Larsen.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sierra Lutheran High School, 1837 Mountain St., Carson City.




Dewey Wendell Linze


1925-2006


Dewey Wendell Linze, 81, a Douglas County resident for the last 11 years, died Sept. 28, 2006, at Evergreen in Gardnerville. He was born Aug. 17, 1925. Son of the late Dewey and Lillian Linze, Mr. Linze grew up in St. Louis, Mo. during the Great Depression. He earned a Bronze Star in the Navy during WWII, and his bachelor's degree at University of Southern California. He began at the Los Angeles Times as a copy boy, and ascended to the rank of city editor before he left the Times to open his own public relations firm. He had several of his own books, magazines and stories published in his lifetime. He was passionate about the English language and loved to sing, and meet people.


Mr. Linze is survived by his wife of 29 years, Irma; his daughter Sherese and her husband James Settelmeyer; his daughter Renee and her husband Ron Ramm; his four granddaughters and one great-grandson; the Feltman and Ford families; and countless friends.


Mr. Linze will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered in a private family ceremony.




Charles D.


'David' Rich


1933-2006


A memorial service will be Saturday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles for Charles D. (David) Rich, 73, who died Sept. 30, 2006, at his home in Minden.


Mr. Rich was born July 11, 1933 in Glendale, Calif. A 70-year resident of Glendale, he moved to Minden three years ago. He attended Glendale High School and Glendale College and served honorably in the Army during the Korean War. After his discharge he worked for Rocketdyne, testing engines for the X-15, was a courier with UCI and, for 36 years, a civil servant to the City of Glendale. He loved to travel, visiting Hawaii many times as well as Korea and Japan while serving in the army and Machu Picchu, Ecuador in 2005. He built and raced hot rods as a teenager and returned to this hobby later in retirement after moving to Minden in 2003. He was a member of the Valley Cruisers and the activity director for the Model A Club of America, both located in Minden/Gardnerville.


Mr. Rich is survived by his wife Annette Kuse-Rich of Minden; his children Linda and Craig; stepsons Mel and Bob; sisters Barbara Golden of Texas, Mary Gee of Florida, brother Donald Rich of California, as well as five nieces and seven nephews.


Arrangements are in the care of FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home in Gardnerville, cremation to take place at FitzHenry's Crematory in Carson City with inurnment to take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles.
