Pilates exercise can be benefit to anyone

The Pilates exercise program can be the primary means of body conditioning and injury prevention regardless of level of fitness and new studio owner Karen Hooper said everyone can benefit.

"A lot of older people love it because it's non-impact," said Hooper. "It's especially good for women 40 plus. They don't want to work out in a gym but they say, 'I can do this,' and feel good about themselves."

Hooper, owner of BodyWise Pilates in Minden, has 25 years' experience in Pilates.

Some people are unsure of how Pilates programs and the equipment work but Hooper offers a complimentary private session to first-time visitors to get them familiar with the program and apparatus.

Pilates is an exercise program that focuses on the core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and provide support for the spine. Pilates exercises strengthen the deep torso muscles - important in helping in alleviating and preventing back pain.

She said Pilates helps people gain body awareness and helps with back, knee problems and corrects imbalances in the body.

"The equipment helps you maintain your form and strengthen your core," said Hooper.

BodyWise offers multiple level classes for small groups or private classes in Pilates and yoga.

"It's good for beginners to have one-on-one," said Jeni Johnson, certified Pilates instructor and fitness trainer. "It works multiple muscles, little muscles you don't know you have.

"Seeing people succeed makes you appreciate what you're doing," she said.
