Absentee ballots available

The Douglas County Clerk's Office has absentee ballots available now and plans on having sample ballots out in the next few weeks.

Not everyone will be getting the same absentee ballots, however.

Nevada has a closed primary, so Republicans only vote for Republicans and Democrats vote for Democrats. Unaffiliated or minor party members will only see non-partisan races on their ballots.

Where voters live will also determine which candidates will appear on their ballot.

Clerk's Office Management Analyst Larry Weckerle said there are a dozen different ballot styles, which will be posted on the Web site in a portable document format in the next few weeks.

July 25 is the last day residents can register to vote in the primary election.

Residents may register for the November election until October.

Events where voters can meet the candidates will take place throughout July.

A town hall debate hosted by the Douglas County Business Council for commissioner and Assembly District 39 candidates will be 6-8 p.m. July 19 at the CVIC Hall. Genoa will host a candidates' night 6 p.m. July 26 at the Genoa Town Hall.

Both Republicans and Democrats have opened headquarters in the Valley and are preparing events where residents may meet candidates.

The Republican Central Committee headquarters, located at 1679 Highway 395 near the Wildhorse Bar & Grill in Minden, are open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Saturday until the primary.

The Democratic Central Committee headquarters, located at 1617 Water Street, Suite T, Minden, are open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m,. Monday through Friday.

The Douglas County Republican Central Committee, with the Douglas County and Sierra Nevada Republican Women's Clubs will hold a candidates barbecue at the Corley Ranch, 859 Hwy 395, in Gardnerville 2-8 p.m. July 15. Information, Val Nunes, 783-0981.

Democrats will host a fund-raiser barbecue and gathering for Democratic candidates on the Hollister property in Genoa 2-5 p.m. July 30. Information, bud.orange@charter.net
