Resident paints, writes about Sierra

Marye and Lou Roesers' family moved to Antelope Valley in 1967. Marye graduated from UCLA majoring in art and later went on to earn a general elementary education degree. She taught for 20 years and their family lived between Coleville and Mammoth lakes, depending on the season.

In Mammoth, the couple and their four children owned and ran the Mammoth Lakes Pack Station at Lake Mary and the Sierra Meadows Center in Mammoth. At Sierra Meadows they provided cross-country skiing, hay rides, sleigh rides, snowmobiling, dinners and they boarded horses. During those busy days Marye continued to paint western art, scenery and people of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Since her retirement and the selling of the Mammoth properties, Marye has been mainly focusing on producing watercolors and working on her book concerning the history of commercial packing on the eastern and western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains. She has originals, gicleé and lithograph prints and greeting cards for sale at many galleries in the area. Some of the galleries that carry her art are Lone Tree Gallery in Minden, Sierra Design Studio and the Whiskey Creek Restaurant Gift Shop in Mammoth, the Coons Gallery and Allen Outdoors in Bishop. Mule Days in Bishop is one of her busy times when she and her daughter Leslie Engelhart share a booth and sell their original art. If all this weren't enough, Marye has recently finished her book on the packing history in the Sierra and is investigating potential publishers. I am looking forward to reading her book when it becomes available.

Beta Sigma Phi traditional St. Patrick's dinner

Plan on having dinner with your neighbors on March 11, starting at 5 p.m. The sorority ladies will provide the time-honored dinner of corned beef and cabbage at the community center in Walker. The local Lions will be on hand to provide a no-host bar. You can purchase dinner tickets, grand prize tickets and raffle tickets from members of the group or at the door. There will be more than 40 donated prizes for the regular raffle. The grand prize is a choice of a trip for two to Las Vegas, which includes airfare and hotel room, or a $500 Visa card. A lovely gourmet food basket will be given out as the door prize for the evening. Sounds like there are many opportunities to go home that evening with some great gifts and a full tummy. The local Beta Sigma Phi supports many local needy causes and in addition awards a scholarship annually at graduation to a local senior. For many years they have donated to the school ski program so more students can take advantage of this program. Again, come out and support the community and enjoy a delicious dinner while catching up on the news of the day.

Coleville High School class of 1966 reunion

Thanks to those of you who contacted me about the mislabeled photo accompanying last week's lead story, "Getting a read on local artists." No, I haven't gone around the bend (it's much too early in the winter to do that). The photo should have identified (from left to right) Nancy Sims, leader of the Antelope Valley Artist group and a talented jeweler, Olga Gilbert, Coleville Branch Librarian, and Marye Roeser who has been producing lovely art for most of her life.
