Douglas Sheriff's Posse scholarship application deadline approaching

Staff Reports

Applicants for the $1,500 Douglas County Sheriff's Mounted Posse's scholarship program have until Feb. 24 to turn in an application.

The Posse has provided more than $12,000 in scholarships over the past seven years.

Scholarship recipients have attended the University of Nevada, Reno, University of California, Davis, Colorado State, Notre Dame, BYU, and other colleges around the country.

Applicants for the 2006 scholarship in the amount of $1,500 must be high school seniors or home schooled students who plan to attend an accredited college in the fall of 2006.

The applicant must have at least an overall 3.0 grade point average and plan to pursue an education in agriculture, animal science, or criminal justice. Preference will be given to Posse members or their children. Applications can be obtained at Douglas High School, Whittell High School, or visit the Web site at www.dcsoposse.com.

The Posse has been active this past year assisting Project Santa Claus, the Carson Valley Food Closet, the DARE Program, and many others.

One of the group's most successful events continues to be the horse, tack, and trailer sale in conjunction with the spring equine veterinary clinic.

On March 18, Posse members will again sponsor the "Spring Equine Clinic and Sale" at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
