Howell's Lock and Safe was created when Michael and Tina-Jo Howell quit their day jobs and made the leap to create the business they'd talked about for a long time.
Michael Howell used to work as a paramedic and ran a mobile locksmith business on the side. Tina-Jo Howell worked for the Douglas County School District.
"We always wanted to have our own shop," said Tina-Jo Howell. "The opportunity came up and we're going through with it. This is a long time dream and we're doing it in one big move.
"We wanted to get away from the big city life," Howell said about her family's move to Carson Valley six years ago. "I grew up in Maryland and wanted our kids to experience what it's like to live in a small town."
Michael Howell worked with his father in the family locksmith business in San Diego and has 30 years experience as a locksmith.
He supplies and installs new hardware for both commercial and private residences.
He creates automatic and keyless entryways and exit devices. He works on lock components, makes keys and repairs and opens safes.
"If you have a lock problem, call us," Tina-Jo Howell said.
Howell's Lock and Safe specializes in the repair and refurbishing of ignition and door locks for antique vehicles. Tina-Jo Howell said they have the only shop in the area that provides this service.
"People who have old cars and go to car shows like Hot August Nights need this service and ask for it," she said.
A grand opening event is at 8 a.m. Wednesday at 1408 Industrial Way No. 3 in Gardnerville.
A lunch buffet of cold cuts, sandwiches and chicken wings will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"If you're around at lunchtime, grab a bite to eat," said Tina-Jo Howell. "Get a key cut and get to know us."
Howell's Lock and Safe is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The business number is 782-KEYS. (782-5397)
