Hawker fundraiser to take place on Jan. 18

Staff Reports

A fundraiser for a Ruhenstroth resident who suffered a severe head injury at Sand Mountain last fall is Jan. 18.

Friends and family members are raising money for Douglas High School graduate Corey Hawker, who was hurt in a collision with a dune buggy on Oct. 29.

Wife Jennifer said Hawker, who worked as a plumber for the Douglas County School District, is improving.

She said he is recovering at Sierra Gates and hopes to return home in three weeks.

He was placed on six-month medical leave on Dec. 15 and his insurance will convert to Cobra at the end of January.

However, Jennifer Hawker said she has been amazed at the support she has received in the Valley.

"Everyone has been great," she said. "I can't believe how good the town has been to us. Everyone wants to help. Corey and I have been here basically our whole lives and we wouldn't want to be anywhere else."

A spaghetti feed, silent auction and motorcycle raffle fundraiser is planned for Corey Hawker, from 5-8 p.m. at the CVIC Hall in Minden.

The cost for the dinner is $10 for adults and $5 for children 9 and younger. Raffle tickets are $10 apiece.

Tickets for the raffle are available at the following locations:

Bad Bonz Motorsports 782-2110, Debbie Fleischer 782-7017, Granite Peak Mortgage 782-3343, Jen Evans 265-0062 and Two Guys From Italy 782-4897. Donations can also be made to Bank of America account No. 004971173622. The motorcycle was donated by Bad Bonz, 1539 Highway 395, Gardnerville.
