New urgent care in Holbrook Junction

An open house was held on Jan. 8 at the new MedDirect Urgent Care at Holbrook Junction, an attractive building with a friendly, welcoming staff. There was a large turn out and many residents from Antelope Valley toured the premises to learn what the facility can provide. At the open house the staff provided tours, free flu shots and a buffet of nibbles. Med Direct is meant to be a cost-effective alternative for patients with minor illnesses. This could save many of us trips into Gardnerville when we are feeling unwell. This should help give peace of mind to residents in Antelope Valley since medical help is closer, particularly since the Toiyabe Clinic is now closed. The facility will provide treatment for ailments such as bronchitis, sore throats, simple lacerations, colds and flu, ear infections and sprains. School and sports physical exams can also be done there as well as X-rays and EKGs. In February Carson-Tahoe will provide, in another part of the new building, physical and occupational therapy along with behavioral therapy. Some of the symptoms that should be seen elsewhere are chest pain, abdominal pain, open fractures, pregnancy-related problems and neck and back pain from auto accidents, or infants younger than 2 years old with high fever.

This up-to-date facility is modern and paperless, with all data stored on computers. The Med Direct Urgent Care also has a helicopter landing pad to send severe emergencies on to other hospitals. There will be a limited pharmacy so you can also get a one-time prescription, such as a needed antibiotic, if you want to save a trip into town. Dolly Frey serves as the director for this and three other facilities in the area, and Dr. O'Shaughnessy is the medical director.

The number is 266-3003 or 1 (888) MDNOW4U or 1 (888) 636-6948 for scheduled appointments, but walk-ins are also welcome. Rebecca Kemp, PA-C, will be available Monday through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cash patients will get a 20 percent discount if they pay in full at the time of their visit. The urgent care will accept insurance, excluding Medicare. Stop by and see for yourself what a nice place this is.
