Josie A. Graham

1935-2006

A memorial service is 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Gall Catholic Church for longtime Douglas High School teacher and former county commissioner Josie A. Graham, who died Jan. 4, 2006. A rosary will be recited 7 p.m. today.

Born March 17, 1935, in Lovelock to John and Caroline Aufdermaur, she grew up one of 10 children on a dairy farm in Lovelock.

She graduated valedictorian of her class from Pershing County High School, and was awarded a four-year Harold's Club scholarship. Upon graduating with a teaching degree from the University of Nevada, Graham taught at Bishop Gorman High School, Churchill County High School, Pershing County High School, Stewart Indian School and both Douglas County High School in Gardnerville and Douglas High School in Minden.

Mrs. Graham renamed the community swim team the Douglas Dolfins in the 1970s and served as its coach. She coached several school sports including volleyball, softball, and the Girl's Athletic Association.

As an active member in the community, Mrs. Graham participated in the Minden Fortnightly Club and the Republican Central Committee

Mrs. Graham was appointed by Gov. Bob Miller to finish Barbara Cook's term as Douglas County commissioner in February 1991. She served until Dec. 31, 1992. She also served on the Douglas County Parks & Recreation Board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, former Douglas County School Superintendent George, and her parents.

She is survived by daughter, Patti and Steve Speer, son Mike Graham, daughter Suzi and JoJo Townsell, daughter Coco and Don Bland; six grandchildren, Breana, Jared, Mysta, Mia, Deidre, and Davis; siblings, Caroline, Annie, Jane, Katie, John, Virginia, and Carl.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Douglas High School Boosters, care of Douglas High School.

Michael Haddad

1917-2005

A memorial service is 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakdale Memorial Park Mortuary, 1401 S. Grand Ave., Glendora, Calif., for Michael Haddad, 88, who died Dec. 23, 2005, in Gardnerville.

Mr. Haddad was born May, 29. 1917, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to Joseph and Flora Hanna Haddad. He married Doris Haddad in Winnipeg, April 23, 1940. He served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers during World War II from 1939 to 1945 and was a Japanese POW for six years after the fall of Hong Kong. He was a member of the Hong Kong Veterans Association of Canada, Manitoba Branch. He was a resident of Gardnerville for 13 years and enjoyed dancing, gardening and bowling.

Preceded in death by his wife, Doris Haddad, his brothers George and Eddy Haddad and his parents.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Joyce and John Proffitt of Gardnerville, daughter and son-in-law Dianne and Brian Edmonds of Gardnerville, daughter and son-in-law Lillian and Wayne Nailon of Hesperia, Calif., brother Reginald Haddad and wife Muriel of Clandeboye, Manitoba, Canada and sisters Alice, Audrey, Lil and Agnes, all of Canada. He had six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are in the care of FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home in Gardnerville. Inurnment will take place at Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora, Calif.

Marie L. Hughes

1930-2005

A memorial service for Marie L. Hughes, 75, will be at noon Saturday at Our Lady of Tahoe Catholic Church on Elks Point Road in Round Hill.

Mrs. Hughes died Dec. 28, 2005, at her home in Chimney Rock.

She was born April 5, 1930, in Santa Cruz, Calif., to Abramo and Margaret Locatelli. She graduated from Boulder Creek High School, in Boulder Creek, Calif., where she was class valedictorian. She attended San Jose State University in San Jose, Calif.

She was a teller at First Interstate Bank, Stateline Branch for 24 years.

She enjoyed gardening and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 6-month-old son Robert.

Among her survivors are her husband of 56 years Charles Hughes of Stateline; sons Jim Hughes of Telluride, Colo., and David Hughes of South Lake Tahoe; son and daughter-in-law Andy and Corby Hughes of Minden; daughter, Janet Hughes of Carson City; grandchildren Megan, Shelby and Katelyn Francouer, and Jordan, Savannah, Allie, Connor, Chandler and Preston Hughes; sister, Emily Locatelli of Boulder Creek; brother, Andrew Locatelli and family of San Jose; and extended-family members in northern Italy.

Burial will be at Genoa Cemetery.
