Douglas thumps Wooster to end season

The Douglas boys' basketball team put an exclamation point on the end of its 2005-06 campaign Friday night, topping Wooster 98-44 in the Tigers' home finale.

The 98 points fell just three short of the all-time school record for points scored in a game, set in 1979 when Douglas scored 101 against Yerington.

All that offense, though, was a direct result of a solid night on defense.

"Our defense created a lot of shots in transition, a lot of easy shots," Douglas coach Rob Streeter said. "We've played well in transition, but in order to get there, we needed to get those stops.

"We gave up 98 points to Hug, 82 to North Valleys and 72 to Reno. There weren't a lot of stops in those games and as a result, we didn't get a lot of shots in transition. Tonight was different."

Douglas got its most complete scoring effort of the season, as each player on the Tigers' roster put points on the board and four finished in double figures.

Keith Olson led the way for Douglas, scoring 19 points and going a perfect 7-for-7 from the line. Jeff Nady added 16, Joe Nady put up 14 and Mike Gransbery scored 12 on four 3-pointers.

As a team, Douglas also had its best free-throw shooting night of the season, hitting 13-of-14 from the line.

"We tried to send a message tonight of what people can expect from us in the years to come," Streeter said. "The loss against Reno (Tuesday night), was the final nail in the coffin in terms of the playoffs.

"We spent the last two days in practice combined with the junior varsity team just running competition drills and getting up and down the floor. We talked a lot about the direction we wanted this team to go in the off-season."

Douglas didn't show any signs of a let-down from Tuesday's loss, rattling off a 24-12 first quarter, keyed by a 10-0 run early on that Nate Whalin punctuated with a layup off a nice backdoor bounce pass from Olson.

Jared Trowbridge closed the quarter with a flashy coast-to-coast drive, taking it in for the layup just before the buzzer.

Whalin finished with six points and Trowbridge had four.

David Laird and Brandon Bernard each scored seven points, Jordan Hadlock scored four, James Vacek and Kevin Emm each scored three and Bryant Falcke scored two.

Wooster was led by Darion Andrews, who score 10 points.

Douglas finished its season at 11-16 overall and 6-8 in Sierra League play.
