Newly reopened Headquarters skateshop gets national press

Thrasher magazine's featured shop of the month is back in business in Gardnerville.

Headquarters skateshop is open in a new location in Stratton Center after a month's hiatus. They were named shop of the month in the national skateboard magazine's September issue.

"We're not a new business," said owner Tom Weniger. "We're an existing business that's moved. We want people to know we're here. There is another skate shop between here and Carson City.

"Our store near Raley's was closed while we were in limbo until the new Stratton store was ready. There's less room but we like it better. We're just happy to be here and feel good about the sport," he said.

Headquarters carries shoes, skate and snow gear and clothing for men, women and children.

"We're the only store here that carries Nike and Obey," said Weniger.

Headquarters has Nike, Circa and Fallen shoe brands in children's to adult sizes. They carry Grenade and Mission Six snowgear, Vestal watches, backpacks and Grenade girl's bags and clothing by Krew and Obey. Snowboards are also in stock.

As far as skate equipment goes, Weniger said he puts it all together for his customers.

"We totally do it all," he said.

Headquarters carries its own brand of skateboard, as well as Anti-Hero, Ninth Ward, Baker and Creature. They have wheels by Spitfire and Hubba and trucks by Venture, Indy and Thunder.

Weniger said he was attracted to Carson Valley because of the skate park. The Carson Valley Skate Facility across from Lampe Park was rated by Thrasher magazine as one of the best skate parks in Nevada.

"Our skate park is the main reason we're here," he said. "It's the best in Northern Nevada. It's big and well-rounded. It's got everything you need. We've got things at our park that are better than anything they have in Reno."

Besides putting in a good word for the local skate park, Weniger said that he wants to get people to do their shopping locally.

"My biggest goal is for people to realize that you've got to shop in Gardnerville - you don't have to go to Reno," said Weniger. "We should try to get people to shop in town. And here we are, we're back. I think people missed us."

Michael Guerrero, part of Headquarter's sponsored exhibition team and one of the Valley's top skaters, was featured in Thrasher magazine's November Creature feature.

Headquarters skateshop is located at 1540 Highway 395, Unit D-1 in Gardnerville. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day.
