Bringing shade to sunny patios

Bill Pattison was in general construction for 25 years when he decided his side-line work of installing shade systems warranted his own full-time business, Shade Concepts.

Pattison said he helps people come up with personalized designs for patios, sun rooms and decks for their homes.

"We come up with solutions to fit the house - curves will meet up with curves or gables on the house," he said. "I do estimates and bring picture books for ideas. We get permits from the county to do the work. It's not up to the buyer to do it."

Pattison uses a low-maintenance aluminum product, Alumnawood, for custom pergolas, patio covers and sun rooms.

"It's embossed to look like wood and it's filled with foam or steel," he said. "It can withstand our winds and won't rust, rot and doesn't need to be painted, ever."

Pattison and his seven-man Shade Concepts crew install patio covers that can either help shade homes in the summer to keep power bills lower or keep out snow and rain in the winter.

They build Trex decks, free-standing pergolas and patio and shade systems that can help protect windows of homes built on golf courses.

"A lot of times the main criteria is to preserve and maintain views," Pattison said. "The patio cover has to be a certain height to preserve the indoor view too."

Pattison said a two-patio project might take just three days to complete.

"We pour concrete on the first day, the second day we put up one patio and the third day we put up the second one," he said.

He said he offers no-hassle projects with polite workers who clean up every day.

"We don't play radios and we don't bring dogs," Pattison said. "We maintain a clean job site and work with customers to get the right designs for their needs."
