Sharkey Begovich, longtime casino owner, rancher, benefactor, businessman and Carson Valley citizen, passed away from cancer in 2002. In 2003, his family and friends started the Sharkey Begovich Swing For a Cure memorial golf tournament in his honor. The event benefits the Carson-Tahoe Cancer Center.
The Sharkey Begovich fourth annual Swing For a Cure golf tournament is May 13 at Carson Valley Golf Course, 1027 Riverview Drive in Gardnerville. This year there are some new twists and surprises, "just as Sharkey would have liked," according to organizers.
Entry deadline for the tournament is April 14 to guarantee shirt size. Individual registration is $125 and includes a round of golf, cart, continental breakfast or lunch, beverages, awards, prizes and a hosted awards dinner.
The sponsor play package is $600 and includes golf for four and carts, tee sponsor sign, banner on the course, recognition in printed materials, continental breakfast or lunch, beverages, awards, prizes and a hosted awards dinner.
Organizers are looking for sponsors. Sponsor packages are $100 and up. Choose the sponsorship that's right for you, including tee signage, banners on the field, cash donations, gift certificates, prize donations, breakfast, lunch and exclusive hole sponsorships.
Contributions to the cause stay in the community to serve local cancer patients. In the past, the tournament has raised tens of thousands of dollars.
Event activities:
n 6:15 a.m. - Flight 1 registration and continental breakfast, the driving range is open
n 7 a.m. - Shotgun start Flight 1
n 12:15 p.m. - Flight 2 registration and hors d'oeuvres on the course, driving range open
n 1 p.m. - Shotgun start Flight 2
n 6 p.m. - Player awards dinner and prizes at Sharkey's Casino, sponsored by Sharkey's Casino and the Holder Hospitality Group
Awards include: longest drive, closest to the pin, hole prizes, golf vacations and more.
Golfers will be placed in one of two flights. Select a preference on the registration form. Each team will be a four-person scramble.
