IRS targets 73-year-old for tax evasion

(Staff reports) A 73-year-old Sparks woman has been convicted of tax evasion and threatening an agent.

Ruth Irene Gillings was sentenced to three years' probation and ordered to pay $4,900 in restitution. She will spend two months in a community corrections center.

Agents say Gillings admitted she failed to file a tax return for 2001, even though she earned $19,976 that year.

She was charged with trying to intimidate an IRS officer investigating her case by threatening to "fine her $5,000 per day in gold and silver" and threatening to sue the agent.
