William Gregory 'Greg' Smith

A memorial service for William Gregory "Greg" Smith, 45, a recent Carson City resident, will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 17, 2005, at the Chapel at Highview Baptist Church, Louisville, Ky.

Another memorial service is being planned by Patricia Weaver Oct. 29 in Hailey, Idaho. Call (208) 788-4929 for information.

Mr. Smith died Sept. 27, 2005, in Carson City. He was born in Louisville.

Before coming to Carson City, he lived in Ketchum, Idaho.

Mr. Smith was a rock climber, paraglider, entrepreneur, carpenter and Mason. He worked at the Idaho Youth Ranch.

He made many first ascents in the eastern United States including Red River Gorge, Seneca Rocks and Patagonia.

He was a member of the American K2 expedition. After moving to Ketchum, he became a paraglider and was president of EDEL USA. He was a USHGA Class III paraglider instructor and became the 1988 North American Paragliding Champion and a member of the 1989 U.S. World team. He was the No. 1 U.S. pilot in 1993. He formerly owned and operated Sun Valley Paragliding.

He served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer.

Among his survivors are his mother, Mary F. Smith; father and stepmother, Coleman and Jean Smith; sister, Kelly L. Cowles; nieces Whitney and Rachel Cowles and stepbrother, Jack Baldwin.

Inurnment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park in Louisville.
