Hand-made gifts available at BAC's Artisans' Store

The Artisans' Store at the Brewery Arts Center welcomes the public to it eighth annual Thanksgiving weekend Holiday Open House from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday-Sunday.

Enjoy free refreshments, shop for gifts, and meet the artists as they demonstrate their crafts.

The Artisans' Store features poetry, pottery, basketry, art glass, sculpture, beadwork, painting, woodwork, handspuns, ties, soaps and more unique gift ideas.

There will be a free drawing for a $25 gift certificate and other door prizes.

The Artisans' Store is open year-round, Monday-Saturday, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Seminar to help combat holiday depression

The Carson City Senior Center will host Andrew Drymalski, Ed. D., at Carson-Tahoe Hospital from 10-11 a.m. Nov. 29. He will speak on problems with depression with the onset of the holidays. For information, call 883-0703.

Group meeting for metaphysical discussions

A metaphysical discussion group will meet from 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays at the Church of Religious Science, 675 Fairview Drive, Ste. 216.

Spiritual and religious topics will be considered. The group is open to the public.

Mound House council to fill openings tonight

The Mound House Advisory Council will hold an open meeting at 7 tonight at the Mound House Fire Station, 56 Red Rock Road. There will be nominations and elections for vacant advisory council openings.

Genoa

Victorian homes on display for tour

Genoa's Gothic Victorian house, next to the post office, is noted as one of the finest examples of the architecture of the genre in Nevada.

The house will be included in the Victorian Christmas tour Friday through Dec. 24. Built in the 1870s, the home features window coverings from the Victorian era as well as period wall coverings. The house will be decorated by four different dealers, and staff will be in costume. The J.W. Laird collection of vintage figural Christmas light bulbs will also be on display, and the meaning of the Christmas Pickle will be revealed.

Reno

Reno ice rink grand opening Wednesday

The city of Reno will celebrate completion of its new ice skating rink at 10 N. Virginia St. on Wednesday.

The party will begin with a performance by Jeff Leep's band beginning at 4:30 p.m. At 5 p.m., Mayor Robert Cashell and city council members will welcome the new addition. At 6 p.m., the rink will open for the community to enjoy a free night of skating under the stars until 9 p.m. There will be warm beverages and cookies. Call 326-6309.

American white pelican-breeding colony talk Tuesday

The Lahontan Audubon Society will host Donna Withers, manager of Anaho Island National Wildlife Refuge, at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a free program introducing and describing Pyramid Lake's Anaho Island NWR.

Withers will review the history and status of the American white pelican- breeding colony found on the island, one of the largest breeding colonies of American white pelicans in the world. Withers has been the manager of the refuge since 1999.

Prior to that, she worked in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Endangered Species Program.

Social time begins at 7 p.m., and the program meeting is at 7:30 p.m. at the South Valleys Library at 15650A Wedge Parkway, off of Mount Rose Highway.
