Weight loss celebration planned Friday

HealthSmart and Nevada Fitness will be hosting the Victory Celebration for the Great American Weight Loss Challenge III at Nevada Fitness Center, 829 Fairview Drive at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

This is the conclusion of the 10-week all-inclusive health initiative which focused on nutrition and exercise.

Participants will be honored with certificates of completion and awards will be given to the top three weight loss teams. There will be music and a good time for all who attend. For information, call Annette Luis at 885-1728.

Afternoon of bingo and friendship this Saturday

The St. Benedict Society of Corpus Christi Catholic Church will host an afternoon of bingo and friendship. Bingo will be Saturday; doors open at 11 a.m. with early bird bingo starting at 11:30 and regular bingo from 12:15-2:30 p.m. Cash and raffle prizes will be offered and there will be a 50/50 drawing.

A concession stand will be available as well as free coffee and popcorn. Bingo players must be 21 or older.

Internationally acclaimed exhibit closes Nov. 28

The Nevada State Museum announces the last chance to see the renowned Art and the Animal exhibit and sale. This international showcase of wildlife art, organized by the Society of Animal Artists of New York City, brings together more than 100 world renowned painters and sculptors from the United States, Canada, France, England, Australia and Netherlands. The show is scheduled to close Nov. 28.

The Nevada State Museum in Carson City is the only museum to display the entire 45th Annual Art and the Animal exhibition. After leaving the museum, a smaller version (about 45 pieces) will travel to Colorado, Virginia, Wisconsin and other states in 2006.

The Society of Animal Artists is devoted to promoting excellence in the portrayal of creatures sharing our planet and to educating the public, especially children. The Nevada State Museum is the host of the premier exhibit for the 45th annual event and will be the only museum to show the entire collection. After the exhibit closes, a portion of the exhibit travels to other museums throughout the United States in 2006.

The museum at 600 N. Carson St. is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, and free for children under 18. Call 687-4810.

Douglas County

AARP driving program coming up

An AARP Driver Safety Program class will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Carson City Fire Station No. 1 on South Stewart Street.

Participants will receive valuable information on compensating for the effects of aging on driving and a review of rules of the road.

Students 55 and older with good driving records will become eligible for auto insurance discounts upon completion of the class. There is a $10 fee.
